Understanding Tear Troughs

The tear trough, located between the cheek and lower eyelid, loses volume as we age, leading to dark circles, hollows, and bags under the eyes. This can make us look tired and older. Some people may have prominent tear troughs from a young age due to genetics, while others develop them over time as connective tissue weakens and fat loses its fullness.

The Treatment of Tear Troughs

An effective way to restore volume to the tear trough is through targeted injections of hyaluronic acid or autologous fat. This treatment rejuvenates the area, making patients look younger and more refreshed. At Traumpraxis am Alstertor in Hamburg, our specialists in plastic and aesthetic surgery use their extensive experience to deliver natural results.

The procedure is painless, thanks to local anesthesia, and can last up to 18 months. For a longer-lasting result, surgical fat tissue transplantation is also available.

Causes

The Development of Dark Circles and Bags Under the Eyes

Dark circles and bags under the eyes result from sagging skin and bulging fatty tissue, a process exacerbated by aging, genetics, and an unhealthy lifestyle. Factors such as lack of sleep, stress, excessive UV exposure, and poor diet can worsen these conditions.

Longevity

Hyaluronic Fillers and Their Longevity

Hyaluronic fillers, which bind water in the skin, help maintain a wrinkle-free and firm appearance. The fillers are biodegradable and gradually absorbed by the body. At Traumpraxis, we use TEOSYAL REDENSITY II, a product specifically designed for the tear trough area. It causes minimal swelling and lasts between six and eighteen months, depending on individual factors like age, skin type, and lifestyle. For moderate to severe under-eye bags, surgical procedures may offer longer-lasting results.

Procedure

The Course of Treatment

The treatment begins with a photo for comparison, followed by an examination of the lower eyelids. After disinfecting the area and applying local anesthesia, a fine needle is used to inject the hyaluronic acid filler under the eyelid skin. The filler is then evenly distributed by massaging the area. The procedure takes about 15 minutes for both eyes. Initial results are visible immediately, though final results take 1-2 weeks.

01

Consultation

The first step before any treatment is a detailed consultation. Our experienced specialists take the time to understand your individual needs and wishes. We inform you comprehensively about the various treatment options and answer all your questions. The consultation also includes a thorough examination of the tear trough to assess the condition of the skin and fatty tissue and to select the method best suited to you.

02

Preparation for the treatment

After the consultation and once the treatment plan has been agreed, the treatment area is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. On request, we apply a local anaesthetic cream to make the treatment as comfortable as possible.

03

Carrying out the injection

Our specialists use a blunt cannula to inject the hyaluronic filler precisely into the tear trough. This technique reduces the risk of bruising and ensures an even distribution of the filler. The treatment usually takes only about 15 minutes for both eyes, and you can return to your everyday activities immediately afterwards.

04

After the treatment

An initial result is visible directly after the injection. Slight swelling or redness may occur, which usually subsides within a few days. We recommend avoiding intense physical exertion and visits to saunas or solariums for the first 24 hours. Gently cooling the treated areas can help the swelling subside more quickly.

Aftercare

Side Effects After the Treatment

Most patients can return to work immediately. Bruising and swelling may occur, lasting a few days and can be covered with makeup. Incorrect injections can lead to lumps or filler shifting, making it crucial to choose an experienced specialist for the procedure. Our specialists at Traumpraxis have the expertise to achieve natural-looking results.
