The laser light is configured to a specific wavelength that precisely matches the color of the ink pigments used. For successful tattoo removal, it is helpful if you can provide detailed information about the colors used in your tattoo. Your tattoo artist can supply this information. At Traumpraxis am Alstertor, we use a modern medical laser system capable of breaking down a wide variety of dyes and colors. However, it is important to note that we can only remove dark colors like black or gray. Colors like red, blue, green, and other shades cannot be removed.

The laser is directed at the tattooed skin, where it is absorbed by the ink. This causes the ink to break down into smaller particles, which the body can then eliminate through the lymphatic system.

In the four weeks leading up to your laser appointment, avoid tanning beds. Stop using self-tanners on the area to be treated at least one week before the appointment. Also, refrain from sauna visits during this time. Ensure that your skin is infection-free, and discontinue any blood-thinning medications at least 24 hours before the laser session.

In the days following the laser treatment, care for the treated area with Bepanthen or a similar wound healing ointment. The lasered skin should be exposed to as little sunlight as possible for four to eight weeks after the session. If the tattoo is in an exposed area, it may need to be covered or taped up. Unfortunately, visits to tanning beds and saunas are also prohibited during this time. It may be wise to start removing a tattoo in the fall, allowing the process to be completed by the following summer.

This question cannot be answered definitively as the number of sessions required depends on various factors. The colors used and the density of the ink application are particularly relevant. Typically, three to six laser sessions are needed to completely remove a tattoo. After each session, the color fades. However, we cannot guarantee success within this framework.

In principle, laser treatment can be used to remove most tattoos. However, the success of the procedure cannot be guaranteed for all tattoos. Removal can be particularly challenging with more unconventional colors and tones. It is also possible for a so-called pigment shift to create a negative imprint of the tattoo, resulting in unwanted lightening of the skin. Additionally, the removal of the tattoo may reveal small scars or skin irregularities that occurred during the tattooing process. These cannot be removed during laser treatment.

It is often possible to completely remove a tattoo with a laser. However, this result cannot be guaranteed. Factors such as the type of ink used and the patient’s physical constitution play a role.

Tattoo removal can cause pain due to the heat generated during the process. This pain is comparable to the discomfort experienced during the initial tattooing. However, it is possible to alleviate the pain with the use of a numbing cream.

In rare cases, patients may have an allergic reaction to the laser treatment, such as swelling. Laser treatment can also cause abrasions. Typically, these heal without scarring within a few days. However, if dirt is introduced into these wounds (e.g., through scratching), inflammation and scarring can occur. Such scarring can be avoided with proper care during the healing process.
