What is PRP Treatment for Hair Loss and How Does It Work?
PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. It is a component of the blood that is particularly rich in thrombocytes, or blood platelets. Platelets are crucial for wound healing and help the skin and body regenerate. PRP treatment of the scalp, also known as autologous blood therapy, involves using the patient’s own blood to increase the platelet concentration in the skin. Since only the patient’s own blood is used, there are no rejection reactions. The treatment strengthens weak hair roots, stimulates hair growth, reduces hair loss, and leads to thicker hair.

The Specific Procedure of a PRP Hair Treatment
Consultation
As with all our treatments at Traumpraxis Hamburg, we prioritize patient consultation for PRP scalp treatment. During a non-binding initial consultation, we determine whether the treatment is suitable for you or whether alternatives such as mesotherapy or a hair transplant might be more appropriate.
Blood Collection and Plasma Extraction
After the consultation, the required autologous blood is collected. Only a small amount of blood is needed for the treatment. The platelets are separated from the rest of the blood within minutes using our centrifuge.
Injection of the Plasma
The platelet-rich autologous plasma is then injected into the scalp at a depth of two to three millimeters using microinjections. This procedure takes only a few minutes. Although the scalp generally does not require anesthesia, an anesthetic can be applied upon request for patients sensitive to pain.
After the Treatment
Patients are socially fit immediately after the treatment. However, the hair should not be washed for 24 hours, and the scalp should not be exposed to direct sunlight during this period to avoid unnecessary irritation at the injection sites. Depending on the severity of the hair loss, two to six sessions are usually needed to achieve lasting effects with PRP therapy.
Rest Period – Important Considerations
Two to three days before the treatment, patients should refrain from taking blood-thinning medication if possible. If this is not feasible, it should be discussed during the initial consultation. Post-treatment, the scalp should be spared for about a day, avoiding hair washing and direct sunlight exposure.
How Long Do the Results Last and Can the Treatment Be Repeated?
The duration of the effects of PRP therapy depends on various factors, including the severity of hair loss. The more advanced the hair loss, the quicker the effects may diminish. It is generally advisable to repeat the therapy after a few years, which can be done without complications.
Who Is PRP Treatment Suitable For?
PRP treatment is a particularly gentle and well-tolerated method for treating hair roots, making it suitable for adult women and men of all ages. However, the chances of success are higher if the hair loss is less advanced, so it is advisable to opt for this therapy at an early stage.
Causes of Hair Loss in Women and Men
Hair loss can occur for various reasons, with hereditary hair loss (androgenic alopecia) being the most common, especially in men. Testosterone contributes to the gradual thinning of hair roots, a condition that can be exacerbated by stress, certain illnesses, iron deficiency, and increased consumption of alcohol and tobacco. For women, hair loss is often more stressful. Common causes include iron deficiency and certain illnesses. Alopecia Areata, a rare form of circular hair loss, can also affect women, though its causes are not fully understood. PRP therapy is particularly effective when hair loss is due to aging and the weakening of hair roots. Many of the causes mentioned above can exacerbate these effects. Autologous blood therapy with PRP can help slow down this aging process. During an individual consultation, we can determine whether PRP therapy is the most sensible treatment method for your case.
What Are the Risks of PRP Hair Treatment?
PRP treatment is generally extremely low-risk. Since only autologous blood is used, the injected plasma is well tolerated by the body and not rejected. In rare cases, however, the scalp may be slightly irritated for a few days following the treatment.
